We about ourselves
A Wine- and officially acknowledged resort in the heart of central Moselle.
The first mention dates back to 1085. The origin of both villages is to be placed earlier. With certainty they are of celtic origin as their names show. For instance in the medieval times, Zeltingen was called “Celtanc” an Rachtig was referred to as “Raptacum”. Also the shores of the river and the heights above Zeltingen-Rachtig have been proved to have been inhabited 3.500 before Christ.
The Rosenburg or Kunibertsburg above Zeltingen leads to an important trace. Up to the early 19. century both villages hold a special position amidst the Trier areas. Zeltingen-Rachtig was a political enclave of the bishopry of cologne. This tact is said to go back to archbishop Kunibert of cologne (623-663) and the Rosenburg is supposed to be his birthplace. Thanks to him Zeltingen-Rachtig remained “churköln” from the 7. century until the time of French rule.
With its approximately 1.800.000 grape vines in the vineyards Zeltinger Himmelreich, Schlossberg, Sonnenuhr and Deutschherrenberg, Zeltingen-Rachtig belongs to the large wine producing communes in the area of Mosel-Saar-Ruwer. Dominant is the “Riesling”-wine, also known as the Queen of the wines.
At the guests disposal are about 1.100 beds in Hotels, Pubs, Pensions and Boarding houses.
There is further a great choice of possibilities for leisure activities. Countless events like the song-evening, cup shooting, clubfiesta, streetfiests, wine fiests an last but not least the famous local operetta “Zeltinger Himmelreich”, performed every other year (2007). All these events will add to your entertainment. Many old Estates and half timbered houses form a pleasant picture of the village.
